
Anton Tonchev graduated in Medicine from the Medical University of Varna in 1998. From 1998 to 2003, he pursued his PhD at the research unit of the Department of Neurosurgery, University of Kanazawa, Japan. He returned to Bulgaria in 2003 and has since led the country's first research group focused on brain stem cells.
From 2012 to 2024, he chaired the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the Medical University of Varna, and since 2018 he has been Director of the university's Research Institute. Prof. Tonchev is the chief organizer of the international "Black Sea Neurogenesis" conference (www.blacksea-neuro.org), and has supervised and consulted more than 10 PhD students, mainly in the field of brain stem cells.
